Quality of service is expected now more than ever

Now is the time to hire a J-1 Intern or Trainee

As the world faces new economic challenges, there has clearly been a drop in business levels within hospitality industry; but even in these uncertain times, the level of interest remains constant amongst students and candidates who are interested in coming to the United States. WISE™ has seen a steady number of qualified and eager individuals who are looking forward to Internship and Training positions in the U.S., and the need for quality service is only heightened during times of uncertainty.

This time of economic uncertainty makes smart planning for the future increasingly more important. Regardless of the economic climate, J-1 Trainees and Interns have a lot to offer their training sites.

J-1 participants are qualified, hardworking, and eager to gain experience. From their varied and diverse backgrounds, participants also bring a fresh point-of-view and problem-solving skills. Furthermore, as they can be hired on a temporary basis, incorporating Interns and Trainees into the business plan during a dynamic year may be a prudent choice. As host companies look over their economic forecasts for the year, we would like to remind you of the following facts:

·         J-1 Interns and Trainees are dedicated and hardworking, and committed to succeeding in the industry

·         Programs are available for any length. If the short term forecast looks strong, but a drop in sales is predicted later in the year, consider a six to eight month program.

·         Hiring international participants adds diversity to the workplace, and brings in new ideas

·         International interns are excited and positive and can contribute to the motivation and morale of any team

Text Box: WISE™ Tip: Taxes

This time of year there are always questions from participants about how to file their tax returns.  Like regular employees, trainees and interns are required to file a 2007 return with the IRS. This year, the filing deadline is April 15.

Trainees can do this one of two ways. They can either fill out the paperwork themselves by downloading the proper form from the IRS website, or they can use a paid service which specializes in helping J-1 trainees with their taxes. Here are instructions for each process:

1.            Filing a tax return with a paid service:

Taxback.com provides a substantial benefit for J-1 trainees and interns who are filing taxes, as they have expertise in tax law as it applies to this visa category. To use this service, simply go to their website and follow the instructions provided:

www.taxback.com/WISE™

Remember that Taxback.com charges a fee for this service.

2.            Filing a tax return directly with the IRS:

First the participant should determine whether they are considered a “Non-resident Alien” (Most are). A procedure for determining whether an individual is considered a Non-resident alien is on page 20 of the WISE™ participant manual (page 27 in some editions.)

·         If the participant is a non-resident alien (most are), go to the IRS website here: www.irs.gov

·         Click on “More forms and instructions” on the left-hand side.

·         Select "2008 Form 1040-NR-EZ" and "2008 Inst 1040-NR-EZ Instructions"

·         Click "review selected forms" to download the forms.

·         Fill out this form and submit it with a copy of your W-2 according to instructions

Note that this form will apply for most, but not all participants. Please read instructions carefully.
